United struggled in front of goal last season, scoring just 44 times in the Premier League. Only four clubs managed fewer. High-profile signings Rasmus Højlund and Joshua Zirkzee delivered modest returns, scoring four and three goals respectively, and Amorim is determined to address those shortcomings.

The club have already reached an agreement with Wolves forward Matheus Cunha and Mbuemo is believed to the next step in their rebuilding process.

United are growing increasingly confident about their chances of signing Mbeumo. The 25-year-old forward scored 20 goals in the league last season and is understood to view United as his preferred destination.

Mbeumo’s current contract with Brentford runs until the end of next season, with the option of a further year. There is no release clause in the deal, although Brentford may be open to talks.

He has been left out of Cameroon's upcoming squad for friendlies against Uganda and Equatorial Guinea, joining a number of senior internationals including United goalkeeper André Onana in sitting out the fixtures.

What type of player could United be signing?

While Mbeumo is not an orthodox number nine, he is seen as a dynamic, powerful and pacey attacker who offers flexibility across the front line. Amorim is thought to favour players with versatility as he begins to shape his United side.

His performances last season have gained him admirers across Europe. Tottenham and Newcastle have both allegedly expressed an interest alongside clubs from Spain and Germany.
