After a goalless first half, the hosts opened the scoring through Cornelia Kapocs’ close-range header six minutes after the break, but Iman Beney made it two in two when equalising shortly after.

The Blues then pushed for a winner and found it with stoppage time looming when Aoba Fujino slammed low into the net after receiving a precise Sydney Lohmann pass.

AndrĂ©e Jeglertz’s side were full value for a win that moves them back up to second in the Barclays Women’s Super League table, with their ability to respond in the face of adversity on show once again.

Showing grit once again

This was another encouraging performance from a new-look City side, albeit in a different way to those of other recent victories.

City's attackers weren't at their sharpest despite the ease with which they cut through Liverpool before half-time, and only had themselves to blame when the hosts took the lead.

This may have been a blip in the transformation from former boss Gareth Taylor's possession-based style to the direct transitions of Jeglertz, but City showed a mental strength and determination that they have previously lacked.

City's defensive game may still require work, but what's certain is that this side do not know when they are beaten.

One City fan discusses her delight with the three points

Beth Lee told us: “A great performance at a tricky ground. We need to keep winning as Chelsea and Man United aren’t going to drop many points this season. It’s going to be a very interesting season.”
