Aidan Barlow and Emmanuel Dieseruvwe put Jimmy McNulty’s men 2-0 up at the break, before Joe Pritchard’s second-half strike rounded off the scoring.

The Rochdale boss opted to field an almost entirely different eleven for each half, with only one of the trialists starting both periods.

How the action unfolded

In a match involving two of Greater Manchester's Non League sides, Rochdale dominated the first half against an opponent who were playing their third friendly of the summer.

In midweek, FC United drew with League Two Salford City so this was a good test for the National League outfit who will be looking to mount a serious bid for the title this season.

Tarryn Allarakhia saw the first shot of the game parried wide of the near post by FC United goalkeeper Dan Atherton inside just four minutes.

He then denied a curling effort from Aidan Barlow, who later headed an Allarakhia cross off target, as did one of Rochdale's trialists.

Barlow also had an effort blocked before he eventually opened Rochdale's pre-season account.

Barlow, who signed a contract extension at Spotland this summer, turned home from close range after Tobi Adebayo-Rowling clipped a cross to Emmanuel Dieseruvwe at the back post, who expertly cushioned a header into his path.

Dieseruvwe then sent two chances of his own off target, a header and a side-footed effort from inside the area, before he eventually netted his first goal for the club. An Allarakhia shot was deflected wide for a corner, taken by Casey Pettit. His delivery found the tall striker, who volleyed it home from ten yards.

After several changes for the away side at the break,  theycontinued to dominate possession. Liam Hogan also sent a flicked header off target from a corner in what was of many missed opportunities.

Shortly after the hour mark, Rochdale finally made it three. Joel Pritchard found the net just 18 minutes into his appearance in the Rochdale blue.

Kyron Gordon won possession back and played a ball into the middle, where a neat interchange between Ian Henderson and Trialist A led to Pritchard slamming home from just outside the six-yard box.

He almost doubled his tally less than ten minutes later but saw a rasping shot tipped onto the woodwork by Atherton.

The score would remain 0-3 with the Rochdale boss being pleased with the workout for his side in testing conditions. For FC United, this was another test against a team higher up than them in the football pyramid. Their next home match is another friendly, this time against Exeter.

Who are FC United of Manchester?

They aren't the team owned by the class of 92. That's Salford City. FC United was formed in June 2005 by fans of Manchester United that were opposed to American businessman Malcolm Glazer's takeover of that club. FCUM are owned and democratically run by their supporters with the club operating on a one-member, one vote basis. GM Super News will certainly be covering more of their matches over the next few months.
