Warrington had largely dictated the contest and took an 8-2 lead into the break after Matt Dufty touched down, the try made by a dazzling burst from Josh Thewlis. Earlier, Marc Sneyd and Gareth O’Brien had exchanged penalties.

Five minutes into the second half, Jake Thewlis (Josh’s younger brother) extended the lead to 14-2, seemingly putting the Wolves in control. But Leigh responded as Umyla Hanley touched down to reduce the arrears.

Sneyd then landed a remarkable 46-metre penalty to make it 16-8 with ten minutes to play, but the momentum had shifted. Hanley crossed again to set up a grandstand finish before Owen Trout barrelled over with less than three minutes remaining to seal a remarkable turnaround.

The result leaves Warrington in eighth, still four points off the top six with seven rounds to go, and ruing a result that had looked firmly within their grasp.

For Leigh, it was a fourth win on the bounce and their seventh in eight matches, form that puts them just a point behind second-placed Wigan Warriors.

Leigh's standout performers

Tesi Niu

The off-season signing was among Leigh’s most impressive on the night. He was perhaps fortunate to avoid punishment for a late hit on Ben Currie in the first half, a moment that is likely to come under further scrutiny. With ball in hand, though, he provided energy and creativity in attack.

Umyla Hanley

Hanley scored two of Leigh’s tries and finished both well. There were lapses defensively, but his attacking contribution was decisive. Without his sharpness near the line, Leigh would have struggled to stay in the contest.

Josh Charnley

A solid performance from Charnley against his former club. He did not cross the whitewash but delivered everything expected of a winger. He was reliable under the high ball, carried strongly and offered consistency throughout.
