The Latics were punished for a slow start, falling behind inside four minutes when Joe Snowdon finished smartly after Harry Smith had flicked on Finley Munroe’s cross. Swindon struck again midway through the first half, Snowdon involved once more as his shot was pushed out by Matthew Hudson before he teed up Tom Nichols to fire high into the net.
Joe Quigley offered a response, heading over from a Ryan Woods free-kick before making no mistake in the 34th minute with a powerful header from Tom Conlon’s set-piece to halve the deficit.
That goal gave the hosts momentum and they went close to an equaliser when Mike Fondop’s header from another Conlon delivery was denied by former Oldham goalkeeper Connor Ripley.
Swindon should have sealed the contest five minutes from time when Billy Bodin broke down the right and delivered a low cross into the box. Harry Smith slid in to meet it from close range but sent his effort over the bar.
Oldham pushed for an equaliser in the closing stages
Oldham came within inches of an equaliser in the final minute when Connor Ripley failed to deal with Ryan Wood’s cross from the left. The loose ball fell to Joe Quigley inside the area, but his effort was blocked on the line and appeals for a penalty were dismissed by the referee.
The Latics saw more of the ball after the interval yet struggled to turn possession into clear openings. Despite a late spell of pressure, including a series of long throws from Jordan Ogle, they were unable to find a breakthrough and slipped to a defeat.
Brief Oldham fan analysis
One Oldham fan posted on his Facebook page: “We probably deserved a draw, but we were ultimately punished for a poor 25 minutes at the start of the match, where we conceded two goals. Omwards and upwards. The win will come for us.”
