In a bruising first half, it was Newport who created most of the few chances, though Salford captain Luke Garbutt came closest with a curling free-kick that rattled the crossbar.
The breakthrough arrived shortly after half-time when centre-back Adebola Oluwo met Ben Woodburn’s cross with a composed volley at the back post.
Newport pushed hard for a response, but despite Michael Reindorf drawing a fine save from Matty Young and substitute Michael Spellman firing narrowly wide, the home side lacked a cutting edge in the final third.

Salford, who also saw Kallum Cesay go close to a second, held firm to move into the automatic promotion places at this early stage of the season. Newport, by contrast, remains winless at Rodney Parade in eight matches across all competitions, suffering a second defeat in four days.
David Hughes’ side began with intensity in a frantic opening where neither team kept possession for long, but their failure to capitalise left Salford free to continue their strong start under Karl Robinson, whose team sits firmly among the early pace-setters.
Salford reaction
Dan, a Salford fan, told us: “It's almost a completely new Salford team from last season, so I thought they'd take time to gel, however, you can't complain with 3 wins from 4. The squad is still a bit light, but we have 3 or 4 key players to come back. I am a lot more confident about our chances for this season.”
Another fan added: "You can see there’s a really good team spirit this season. The players and manager need to keep this momentum going now. High hopes that the team can build on last season and gain promotion.”
