Adam Keighran, Bevan French and Zach Eckersley all crossed in the first half to give the hosts a 16-point cushion at the interval. Further tries from Junior Nsemba, Jai Field, a second for Eckersley, Liam Marshall and Sam Walters rounded off a clinical performance that kept them firmly in the title race.

The result lifted Matt Peet’s side above their rivals St Helens and to within four points of leaders Hull KR, while Wakefield remain seventh, one point outside the play-off spots.

A closer look at a stunning victory for Wigan

Wigan began in dominant fashion, Keighran opening the scoring after 15 minutes when he latched onto a clever French grubber and forced his way past two defenders. French then marked his 100th Super League try by reacting quickest to his own kick that had rebounded off the post. Moments later, the stand-off produced a brilliant one-handed offload to Liam Farrell, who sent Eckersley diving over in the corner.

Wakefield managed to get off the mark on the stroke of half-time when Max Jowitt kicked a penalty after Wigan were caught offside, but the contest was already slipping away.

Marshall created the fourth try shortly after the restart, bursting down the left before releasing Nsemba to score. A Patrick Mago break then paved the way for Field to finish a sweeping move.

Even when Ethan Havard was shown a yellow card for a high challenge on Lachlan Walmsley, Wigan continued to dominate. French and Farrell combined once more to free Eckersley for his second of the afternoon.
