Whether or not supporters are still growing their hair in hope of a winning streak, fans have at last been given cause for optimism.

The 2-1 victory over Chelsea was hard-earned but offered Ruben Amorim something he has been searching for since his arrival: a platform to build momentum and ease the scrutiny around him. For the first time under his tenure, United have secured back-to-back Premier League home wins.

Saturday’s trip to Brentford, who sit 17th, presents an opportunity for Amorim’s first successive league triumphs. That such a milestone remains elusive is telling, though Sunderland’s visit to Old Trafford soon after looks favourable enough to extend the run.

What Amorim cannot afford is the familiar pattern of one uplifting result followed by an immediate setback. Against Chelsea, there were signs of a team beginning to find rhythm. With a numerical advantage in the first half, United pressed with intensity and invention, while after Casemiro’s dismissal, our defensive resilience and counterattacking threat were just as impressive. There is little indication that this squad has failed to buy into the manager’s approach.

United sit only three points off second place, but a glance at the table after five games still shows them in 11th. Amorim will be judged on whether he can return the club to European competition this season. Should he fall short, the consequences will be severe.

A run of erratic results may be preferable to the collapse of last year, but genuine progress demands consistency. Amorim must ensure United’s season is defined not by the twists of a rollercoaster but by more performances in the mould of that win over Chelsea.
