Tries from wingers AJ Towse and Josh Charnley gave Leigh an early 8-0 lead before Lewis Jagger responded with a try on his Huddersfield debut just before half-time.
Jake Bibby brought the visitors level after the interval, but Leigh regained the advantage with a try from full-back Bailey Hodgson. Frankie Halton extended the lead, and Brad Dwyer added two further tries, either side of Huddersfield’s third score from Tom Burgess.
Leigh will now host Wakefield Trinity in the first play-off eliminator on Friday, 26 September. The club approaches the fixture having secured the highest finish in their history, just three seasons after competing in the Championship.

For Huddersfield, it was their 20th defeat of the season, leaving them in 10th place. Leigh took the lead after only three minutes, spreading play on the last tackle before Towse dived into the right corner. Charnley followed up with their second try on the opposite side.
The Giants responded as debutant Jagger found a small pocket of space and leapt to touch down for a spectacular first try, leaving the visitors 8-4 behind at the interval. After the break, Bibby, playing his final game for Huddersfield, scored in the right corner to draw the scores level at 8-8, but Leigh quickly regained control.
Reaction from Leigh fans
Jonathan was delighted with the win and performances throughout the season. He told us: “Well done Leigh, it is a great achievement to finish third. Solid performances all season. Can’t wait for the play-offs to get started.”
Frank said it wasn’t the best performance but he was happy with the win. He said: “We did what was required to secure third place. It was not a great performance, but the intensity will return next week. It has been a remarkable season for the Leopards, regardless of the results from here on.”
Jeremy wasn’t happy with some of aspects of their performance. He added: “We produced a fairly poor overall performance. They will no doubt have been hoping for a stronger display, and it was not the ideal preparation for next week.”
Jackie added: “I think we will need a new kicker next year after a very poor performance tonight. They will need to raise their game against Wakefield if we are to progress to the next round.”
