Premier League | Man United v Sunderland | Two angles of Sesko celebrating

Benjamin Sesko has scored two goals in four Premier League starts for Manchester United. That is already half the total his predecessor, Rasmus Hojlund, managed across the whole of last season.

At just 22, Sesko has shown a steady trajectory of improvement since arriving from the Bundesliga, no small feat for a young forward adapting to the scrutiny that comes with playing for one of world football’s most-watched clubs.

Back-to-back goals before the October international break, achieved with limited service, were encouraging. Yet what has stood out more is his all-round play. Sesko’s ability to hold up the ball, link attacks and provide a focal point has given United’s frontline a new dimension.

Even so, his name appeared prominently in a social media post on Monday, which listed the results of a poll asking 20 agents to name the "worst deal" of the summer window. Sesko led the way with six votes, ahead of James Trafford with three, while Liverpool’s expensive pairing of Florian Wirtz and Alexander Isak, neither of whom have scored in the league, received one each.

The logic behind such criticism is questionable. Highlighting a player who has already shown glimpses of his quality seems premature, particularly when others have yet to justify far greater fees. But this is Manchester United, where every new signing becomes a talking point.

If Sesko was not already familiar with the unforgiving glare that comes with life at Old Trafford, he will be now. Early signs, however, suggest he has the composure and talent to rise above the noise and avoid the fate of his predecessor.

United fans take to social media to defend Sesko and the signing after this Athletic post...

@MattyFC__ posted on Twitter/X: “The agenda against Man United is becoming hilarious at this point...”

@OjasvaRaghav added this comment on the same platform: “I love how we all came together for Sesko after that Athletic post. We should do this more often.”

@AmorimEra_’s had a similar theme: “Love to see the Manchester United fanbase uniting to support Benjamin Sesko today.”
