Salford City fall to third successive defeat
Chesterfield 2 - 0 Salford City
Two second-half goals saw Chesterfield extend their unbeaten run against Salford City to five games.
Following a close first half, an unfortunate Ollie Turton own goal put the Derbyshire side in front before substitute Ronan Darcy added to the score in the last 10 minutes.
Dan Udoh hit the post before the game was out, but the Ammies were unable to muster a comeback and slipped to a third straight league defeat.
How Salford succumbed to another defeat
The first chance of the afternoon came to Brandon Cooper after Chesterfield cleared a free kick delivered into their box, but the defender’s ambitious lob dropped onto the roof of the net.
With just under a quarter of an hour gone Lee Bonis opened up to help Ryan Stirk’s cross from the left on, but he turned it wide of the far post. At the other end, Kallum Cesay did well to win possession on the right and pull a pass into Udoh at the top of the box, but as he created space to shoot, he was quickly closed down and the Spireites cleared their lines.
After the 30-minute mark the home side managed a couple of half chances, but Bonis saw his header saved by Mark Howard, who was also able to save a shot by Armando Dobra from outside the box with relative ease.
Salford had the last couple of first half chances, firstly when Cesay rounded Stirk and played a ball through the six-yard box that no one managed to get a touch of before Vontae Daley-Campbell put it behind for a corner. Then a few minutes later Matt Butcher brought down a clearance brilliantly near to halfway before finding Ossama Ashley, who in turn fed a pass to Cesay. The midfielder squared a pass that came to Cole Stockton on the far side of the box who took a shot that was closed down. He had another chance to do something with the possession though and dinked a pass forward for Udoh to try and reach, but Zach Hemming just got his hands to it first.
The game started to open up a bit early in the second half, Udoh putting Hemming under pressure and nearly forcing an error that would have given Cesay a tap-in, but the Chesterfield goalkeeper just about managed an effective clearance. That actually turned into a chance for the hosts as Dilan Markandy carried the ball up the right and crossed into the middle. Howard’s attempt to clear the ball didn’t get much distance and Cooper tried to clear further, but it fell for the arriving Liam Mandeville to try and hit from about 12 yards, except for an outstanding Ashley challenge that won the Ammies a free kick.
Kadeem Harris nearly capped off a neat Salford moved with the opener just past the 60-minute mark. Howard started it off with what looked like a mis-hit clearance, but it transpired that it was an excellent pass out to substitute Kelly Nmai who then played a great pass into Cesay. He spread the play over to Harris on the right, who drove into the area before slamming a rising shot that cleared the crossbar.
Just a couple of minutes later though Salford found themselves behind, in unfortunate fashion. Liam Mandeville delivered a corner from the left that Chey Dunkley headed back across goal, and in stooping to head the ball clear Turton was unlucky to head it into his own net.
Karl Robinson made a couple of further attacking changes, bringing on Ben Woodburn for his 50th Salford appearance and Ros Longelo in place of Matt Butcher and Cooper. Longelo came close to his first Salford goal after being played down the right by Udoh, but his curling shot was just beyond the far post. A minute later Udoh came even closer himself after being played through by Cesay, and while his low shot beat Hemming, it came off the near post.
In the final 10 minutes, Chesterfield put the game to bed, thanks to the impact of their own substitutes. James Berry carried the ball up the left beyond Turton and crossed into the middle, where Howard got something on the ball, but wasn’t able to catch it. He recovered well to block Darcy’s first attempt, but he was left stranded for the second that Darcy gratefully took to double the Spireites’ lead.
In stoppage time, Nmai slipped a ball through for Udoh to chase, but he was closed down by Hemming, who ushered it out for a corner that was dealt with
