Two people have died and the suspect has been shot dead after a violent attack outside a synagogue in Manchester.
Greater Manchester police confirmed that a car was driven at members of the public before a man was stabbed outside Heaton Park synagogue on Middleton Road at about 9.30am.
The suspect did not enter the building and was shot at the scene by armed officers.
Five people, including a security guard, were injured. In a statement issued at midday, police said two members of the public had been killed, while three others remain in a serious condition. Chief Imam Allama Qamaruzzaman Azmi, of the neighbouring Anwaarul Haramain Jam’e Masjid, has issued this statement.
"We are deeply saddened by the news of today’s stabbing incident outside a synagogue in Manchester.
"Our thoughts and prayers are with the victim, their families, and the wider Jewish community at this difficult time.
"As a Masjid serving the people of North Manchester, we stand in solidarity with our Jewish neighbours and community.
"For generations, the Muslim and Jewish communities of Manchester have lived side by side in peace, mutual respect, and friendship, we remain committed to nurturing that bond and strengthening it in the face of any attempt to sow division.
"Acts of violence have no place in our city, in our faiths, or in our shared future. We must all uphold the sanctity of every human life.
"We call on all people to come together to show solidarity with our Jewish community. There is no room for violence or hate in Manchester - only unity, peace and respect for one another."

Dave Russel, chief fire officer at Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service said:
"Shortly after 9.40am today (Thursday, October 2 2025), fire engines from across Greater Manchester, including specialist appliances, were mobilised to a major incident outside a synagogue on Middleton Road, Manchester.
"Our firefighters arrived quickly and worked alongside colleagues from Greater Manchester Police and North West Ambulance Service to provide emergency care for casualties and evacuate a neighbouring building.
"Our crews remain at the scene, where we will work alongside our emergency service partners and provide all the support we can.
"All our thoughts are with those affected by this horrifying incident."
