Hull KR, the most consistent side across the season, demonstrated exactly why during this Grand Final.
Despite boasting the electric partnership of Bevan French and Jai Field, and fielding 15 players from last year’s final, Wigan could not match their rivals’ authority. The result marked the first trophyless season of the Matt Peet era.
This was, however, an unusually flat display from Wigan. Aside from a bright opening spell, they rarely looked capable of taking control.
Since Peet’s arrival in 2022, Wigan have thrived on calm, calculated rugby that has brought a steady stream of trophies. Yet here, they looked rattled by Hull KR’s physical, high-tempo approach. The intensity of their opponents, typified by bruising tackles and relentless pressure, exposed cracks that few have seen in Peet’s side.

That said, it would be unjust to focus only on Wigan’s failings. Hull KR were superb across the park – disciplined, inventive and clinical in attack, with their defensive resilience ensuring Wigan never found a foothold.
Still, this was not the Wigan we have come to expect. Once the game began to slip away before half-time, they appeared short of ideas and spirit, a rare sight under Peet’s stewardship.
Best reaction
Matt Peet told BBC Radio 5Live and other media outlets: "I'm proud of the team, Hull KR deserve to win and the night belongs to them. Sometimes I think these things are written in the stars and this season belongs to them. They've worked so hard as a club, as a playing group, the coaching staff. There are things that we'll look back on and rue, but it's different tonight when you're in the moment.”
Alfred, a fan who was sat in the Stretford End today, said: “I'm a Wigan fan, but HKR deserved it for the way they played today and over the whole season.”

Ian, another fan, added: “Wigan fan for 60 years. Gutted. I am sure there are many happy fans of other teams, and I understand. However, I don't believe in sour grapes after a loss, so well done to Hull KR. To all their fans, enjoy it, you deserve it. Respect to you, your team and your brilliant coaching staff. Well done KR.”
Henry was magnanimous in defeat. He added: “Wigan fan here. Total respect and congratulations to the Robins. Fully deserved by all concerned. Been the best team all year. Willie Peters has done a magnificent job and the players react to that. After the first 10 minutes or so, you totally bossed us and strangled the game, forcing uncharacteristic errors. Enjoy your night. Can't wait for next season's meetings.”
