For Matt Peet and his Wigan side, the stakes are equally significant. Victory would secure a third consecutive Super League title, a feat only previously managed by Leeds Rhinos in 2007, 2008 and 2009, and by St Helens in 2019, 2020 and 2021, before they lifted the trophy again in 2022.
For Hull KR, the task is clear: defeat Wigan Warriors and they will lift the Super League trophy for the first time, becoming only the fifth club to achieve the feat. A win would also place them alongside Bradford Bulls, St Helens, Leeds Rhinos and Wigan as treble winners.
The two sides in the 2025 season
This has been a landmark campaign for Hull KR. They finished top of the table for the first time in Super League history, becoming the ninth club to claim the League Leaders’ Shield. The race went down to the final rounds, with Wigan pushing them all the way to Round 27 and finishing just two points adrift.
Willie Peters’ side eventually sealed the Shield with a crucial win over Warrington Wolves on the penultimate weekend. Now attention turns to Old Trafford and the chance to complete a historic clean sweep of trophies.
A Wigan win on Saturday would bring their tally to eight Super League Grand Final victories, having first lifted the trophy at the inaugural final in 1998.
Head-to-head history
This will be the second meeting between the sides at Old Trafford, with Hull KR featuring in consecutive finals, the only two in their history. Wigan, meanwhile, are contesting a record-equalling 14th Grand Final, drawing level with rivals St Helens.
In this year’s Super League, the honours are even. Wigan claimed a 28–12 victory at Sewell Group Craven Park, while Hull KR edged a 10–6 win at The Brick Community Stadium in Round 22.

Across their last ten encounters, there has been little to separate the two teams, with Wigan winning six and Hull KR five. Overall, Wigan have triumphed in 30 Super League meetings between the clubs, including victories in the 2009, 2010 and 2023 play-offs, as well as the 2024 Grand Final, while Hull KR have recorded 13 wins.
