The Dutch defender rose highest to meet a late corner in the sixth minute of added time, salvaging a draw for United in a contest they had appeared to control, then somehow contrived to nearly lose.
Bryan Mbeumo had given the visitors a first-half lead, nodding in Amad Diallo’s pinpoint cross from the right. United looked comfortable for much of the match, with goalkeeper Senne Lammens producing fine saves to deny Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven as Tottenham pushed for a response.
The home side’s frustration turned to relief six minutes from time when Mathys Tel, introduced to a chorus of boos for Xavi Simons midway through the second half, swivelled to meet a cross and thumped his shot beyond Lammens.
Tottenham’s momentum grew, and when Richarlison deflected Wilson Odobert’s long-range strike past Lammens, the Brazilian appeared to have completed the turnaround.
But there was one final twist. With United down to ten men after Benjamin Sesko’s injury and Lammens venturing forward for a last-gasp corner, De Ligt rose to glance in from a tight angle and snatch a point.

The final whistle brought disbelief on both sides. Richarlison, who had celebrated his goal in tears of joy, was crestfallen. United’s head coach Ruben Amorim, meanwhile, could scarcely believe his team had let victory slip through their grasp before salvaging it at the very last.

Matthew: That result perfectly captures where we are as a team right now. We still lack the strength to see out tight matches, but we’re more resilient than we were last season, which means we’re now drawing games we might previously have lost.
Tommy: United controlled the match without necessarily dominating possession. For most of the game, Spurs never looked like scoring. The absence of Rasmus Højlund’s pace up front was obvious. United should have taken all three points, but making so many substitutions at once disrupted the rhythm and focus.
Liam: We’re crying out for a holding midfielder with energy to complement Casemiro. On the plus side, we showed good character to come back, and the goalkeeper already looks a clear improvement on the last two.
