Nathaniel Mendez-Laing struck from the spot late in the first half before Callum Paterson wrapped up the points for MK Dons deep in the second, a harsh blow for a Salford side that had controlled long spells and created the clearer chances but failed to make them count.

Paul Warne’s team, having dropped points in their previous two league matches, began on the front foot. Rushian Hepburn-Murphy drove down the left and delivered a cross that Ade Oluwo cleared straight back to him. His follow-up effort forced Matty Young into a save at the near post, and the subsequent corner was claimed by the Ammies goalkeeper.

Salford found their rhythm, but didn’t find a goal

They were inches from going ahead in the sixth minute. Kelly Nmai hit the bar after Craig MacGillivray spilled Josh Austerfield’s strike from the edge of the area. The chance had developed after Ollie Turton’s mishit effort fell kindly for Luke Garbutt, who teed up Austerfield to let fly. Nmai reacted quickest to the loose ball but lifted his finish onto the woodwork.

Kallum Cesay, outstanding on the road last time out, continued to get into promising positions although his radar was off as several attempts drifted wide.

The match became increasingly bitty as the half progressed. Dan Udoh fashioned space to shoot from the edge of the area but sent his attempt over. Moments later he was penalised for a collision with Jack Sanders in the box, allowing Mendez-Laing to convert the penalty.

Salford’s best chance to level after the break came from an early corner when Matt Butcher’s delivery dropped between Udoh and Oluwo in the six-yard box but neither could apply a touch.

Karl Robinson turned to Jorge Grant and Cole Stockton with 25 minutes remaining in an effort to inject fresh impetus. Grant forced MacGillivray into a low save at his near post after Nmai was fouled near the corner of the area, although the resulting corner came to nothing.

Another corner in the 78th minute allowed Salford to sustain pressure, with Oluwo’s firm tackle outside the area sparking an attack that ended with Kadeem Harris cutting inside and shooting low. MacGillivray again reacted sharply.

Young had little to do at the other end until stoppage time when he comfortably gathered a shot from Kane Thompson-Sommers. But Salford were undone moments later. Harris appeared to be clipped in the box only for play to continue and MK Dons countered swiftly. Alex Gilbey carried the break and squared for Paterson, who lifted his finish over Young to secure the victory and hand Salford their first defeat in six.
