Jake Richards, Cohen Bramall and Isaiah Jones all scored to punish a wasteful Stockport side, lifting Luton to within three points of the play-off places.

County took to the field on a bright and mild autumnal afternoon, showing a whopping half a dozen changes from their FA Cup win at Tranmere Rovers last weekend.

Closer look at a bad afternoon for the home side

A series of injuries over the previous week forced four changes in the outfield, with Callum Camps, Owen Dodgson, Owen Moxon and Corey O’Keeffe coming in for captain Ollie Norwood, Joseph Olowu, Tyler Onyango and Ben Osborn. Ben Hinchliffe and Nathan Lowe also returned, replacing Corey Addai and Jayden Fevrier. In Norwood’s absence, top league scorer Kyle Wootton was given the captain’s armband.

The hosts had early opportunities through Nathan Lowe, Callum Connolly and Kyle Wootton, but Luton opened the scoring in the 34th minute when Richards bundled home Bramall’s cross. Bramall added a second just four minutes later with a curling free-kick from outside the box.

County introduced Beno Andrésson and Fevrier shortly after the hour in an attempt to revitalise their attack, but their next effort, a strike from Wootton, was comfortably saved by Keeley. Moments later, Luton secured a third when Jones capitalised on a Richards pass and slotted the ball past Hinchliffe.

Keeley kept County at bay again, tipping a deflected Bailey effort around the right post. Ten minutes from the end, County’s day worsened as Dodgson, already booked in the 20th minute, received a second yellow card and was sent off.

Connolly produced a crucial goal-line clearance in the 90th minute, denying substitute Ali Al-Hamadi and ensuring the scorers were not troubled further. Despite the effort, defeat was inevitable, extending a sequence to 16 games in which Luton had remained unbeaten against Stockport in Football League and non-league encounters since 1969.

This was a disappointing performance, bringing an end to a fabulous run. After the match, Stockport Dave Challinor told the media: "We get punished from really poor defending from our perspective, that ultimately makes it a tough game against a good team.”
