We have lost a musical icon

RIP Mani

Gary Mounfield, known as Mani, has died at the age of 63.

The bassist, who grew up in Crumpsall, Manchester, became a central figure in British rock after joining the Stone Roses in the 1980s.

He featured on both of the band’s albums and remained with them until their split in 1996 before going on to join Primal Scream. He left the group in 2011 following the decision to reform the Stone Roses.

News of his death, announced on Thursday 20 November, has prompted an outpouring of tributes from across the local community and throughout the music industry.

Music icons have been posting tribute messages across social media platforms and in other areas.

Liam Gallagher posted on X: "IN TOTAL SHOCK AND ABSOLUTELY DEVASTATED ON HEARING THE NEWS ABOUT MANI MY HERO RIP RKID LG"

Paul Arthurs, Bonehead from Oasis, posted: "RIP Mani. X"

Mani, a well-known United fan, enjoyed following his team around the world. Fellow red Pete Boyle posted: "Absolutely devastating news about Mani. We messaged each other only two days ago. My heart goes out to his kids & family. Had some great times in life coz of that man."

Reverend and the Makers posted: "My heart is broken. Found out this morning and just felt low as it gets all day. Mani was my musical hero and just a lovely genuine human.”

Former Hacienda DJ Dave Haslam shared an Instagram story with the caption: "RIP you superb man. You'll be much missed but never forgotten."

A statement issued for Ian McCulloch, lead vocalist of Liverpool rock band Echo and the Bunnymen read: "I’m absolutely gutted to hear the news about Mani, who I have always loved and always will love, deeply and forever. Like a brother. I am in shock to be honest.
