The result briefly cut Arsenal’s advantage at the top of the Premier League to two points and underlined City’s resilience in the absence of Erling Haaland, the Leeds born forward ruled out after suffering an injury in training.

For long spells of the first half, City appeared to lack a cutting edge without their leading scorer, as Leeds pressed with energy and intent. Yet the visitors found their breakthrough when Antoine Semenyo stretched to guide Rayan Ait-Nouri’s driven low cross into the net, his sixth goal since arriving from Bournemouth in January.

Leeds were left to rue missed chances after a bright opening that unsettled Pep Guardiola’s side. Dominic Calvert-Lewin should have given the hosts an early lead when he failed to convert from close range after meeting Brenden Aaronson’s inviting delivery.

Calvert-Lewin later dragged another effort wide from a tight angle and could not add to his tally of 10 league goals for the season. Semenyo’s decisive contribution ultimately left Leeds still six points clear of the relegation places, but with a sense of what might have been after pushing the champions close.

Victories like can secure titles

Leaving Elland Road with all three points after being second best for long stretches is the kind of outcome that often underpins a title winning campaign, and it served as another reminder of Manchester City’s enduring resolve.

With 10 games remaining, City remain firmly in contention. This was a searching examination of their depth, coming without Erling Haaland, who was denied the chance to face the club once represented by his father. Yet City again demonstrated the strength in reserve that has defined their recent dominance.

Speaking afterwards, Pep Guardiola confirmed Haaland was not fully fit, casting doubt over his availability for Wednesday’s match against Nottingham Forest.

In his absence, City’s £62.5m signing Antoine Semenyo justified the club’s investment, sharpening the edge in the final third and showing the instincts of a natural finisher with a decisive poacher’s goal.

There was nearly another moment of celebration when Nico O'Reilly, scorer in his previous two league outings, rose to meet Matheus Nunes’s cross. His powerful header, however, was superbly repelled by Karl Darlow, whose reflex save kept the hosts in contention.
