These three points moves Michael Carrick’s side closer to qualification

Manchester United manager Michael Carrick approached the contest under mounting scrutiny. His side had won only once in four outings and were still reeling from a surprise home defeat by Leeds United.
Matters were complicated further in the build-up. Alongside the injured Matthijs de Ligt and the suspended duo of Harry Maguire and Lisandro Martinez, Carrick lost a fourth central defender when Leny Yoro picked up a minor issue in training.
It forced an improvised pairing at the back, with 19-year-old Ayden Heaven alongside Noussair Mazraoui, more accustomed to operating at full-back. Both acquitted themselves impressively in a display that lacked fluency but was defined by resilience, organisation and a collective resolve suited to the demands of the run-in.

Once again, however, it was Bruno Fernandes who proved decisive. The captain continues to divide opinion, yet remains indispensable to those selecting the side. His awareness and influence set him apart in this iteration of United and it is no exaggeration to suggest his impact rivals that of any individual since Alex Ferguson stepped down in 2013.
It would now be a surprise were Fernandes not to challenge the Premier League assist record. With his contract entering its final year, attention will soon turn to whether the club’s hierarchy can deliver terms that reflect his standing.
