The frenetic encounter in Merseyside leaves City five points behind leaders Arsenal, albeit with a game in hand, but the advantage now rests firmly with Mikel Arteta’s side.
For long stretches, City dominated possession without finding a way through an Everton side content to absorb pressure. It took a moment of individual brilliance to break the deadlock, Doku curling an exquisite effort into the top corner three minutes before the interval.
Everton emerged with renewed purpose after the break and were rewarded midway through the second half. Thierno Barry capitalised on a loose backpass that left Gianluigi Donnarumma exposed, and although the goal was initially disallowed, it was awarded following a review.
The momentum had shifted
Moyes’ team pressed forward and took the lead soon after, Jake O’Brien rising highest to meet James Garner’s corner before Barry added a second, finishing neatly from Merlin Rohl’s incisive pass.
City, however, responded. Erling Haaland reduced the deficit with seven minutes remaining, setting up a tense finale. With the clock ticking down, Doku delivered once more, cutting in from the left and finding the far corner with a clinical finish to deny Everton a memorable victory.
Complacency ruined a golden opportunity for a win
Those were the words of Manchester City fan Bethany Lee who told us: “There was a lack of desire to score goals when it’s clear we need to reduce the goal difference.
“In addition to that, we weren’t great at the back. These dropped points are our own doing, and now we are all hoping Arsenal stumble.”
