The decisive goal arrived just before the hour mark. Josh Magennis started the move inside the Wigan half with a clever spin and turn before driving forward, breaking into the box and lifting a cross from the right.

His delivery found the pacy winger Wanya Marcal arriving at the far post, where he headed back across goal and into the net off the opposite post.

Stevenage had several opportunities to extend their lead on the counter-attack but failed to capitalise, leaving them facing a nervy finish in which their usually dependable defence looked less assured than normal.

The struggling Latics, however, rarely troubled home goalkeeper Tommy Setford despite finding themselves in some promising positions and enjoying spells of possession.

The best opportunity in a game short on quality came in the first half, when Connor Barrett pulled his effort wide across goal from the edge of the penalty area.
