Despite finishing 23 points behind York in the regular season, the Latics showed their class with a commanding performance that stunned the home side and sent the travelling fans into raptures. York, who secured second place with 96 points, were unable to cope with Oldham’s energy and attacking threat in a one-sided semi-final.
Joe Garner opened the scoring midway through the first half. The forward pounced on a loose ball after York keeper Harrison Male attempted a quick throw that backfired when Alex Hunt failed to control. Garner made no mistake, rifling a first-time strike into the bottom corner.
Just after the restart, Mike Fondop combined smartly with Vimal Yoganathan, who surged into the box and powered a low effort past Male to double Oldham’s lead.

The result was put beyond doubt moments later when Garner turned provider, whipping in a dangerous cross for Joe Pritchard to glance a header into the far corner, sparking wild celebrations among the away support.
Oldham will now head to Wembley on Saturday 1 June, where they will face either Forest Green Rovers or Southend United with a place in the English Football League at stake.
View from the away end
Travelling Oldham supporters were in buoyant mood after witnessing one of the club’s best performances in years.
Daniel, 32, who made the trip from Chadderton, said: “That’s the best we’ve played all season. Every player gave everything. To do that away from home in a semi-final just shows how far we’ve come.”
Thomas, a season ticket holder from Royton, added: “You could see how much it meant to the lads. Wembley here we come.”
Rebecca, who attended the match with her dad, shared her excitement: “I’ve never seen an Oldham side this confident and composed. It feels like we’re finally on our way back.”
