It was an odd feeling after this defeat, because we actually played well and probably should have taken at least a point. The new signings have shown their value, but the midfield still needs strengthening before the window closes. Without that balance it will remain a weakness. Still, this is a long campaign and there are encouraging signs. On to the next one.

I thought that United were excellent, a huge improvement on the disarray of last season. The goalkeeper was poor, although there might have been a foul in the build-up. Arsenal were fortunate, especially with the penalty appeal for Cunha that was waved away. There is no reason to panic. Better days are ahead if everyone holds their nerve and continues to back a manager who has both charisma and ability.

Mbeumo and Cunha, though, have already shown their pedigree in this league and underlined it again today. It promises to be a long season, but there is reason for optimism.

After this, I think selling Hojlund would be a huge mistake. When the current plan B is playing Maguire as a second forward it's clear that we lack the necessary depth. I know a lot of people don't believe this but I think if you give the young Dane a chance to build his confidence now, he will be a useful player for the club.
