A closer look at what happened
Robin Gosens’ own goal cancelled out Simon Sohm’s opener for the visitors inside the first 25 minutes.
Matheus Cunha came close to scoring what could have been the decisive goal when he met a Fernandes cross from the left byline after a neat exchange with Mount, but his effort was deflected over the bar just in front of the goal line.
Yoro then had a header from even closer range saved by De Gea, who later received a standing ovation from the crowd as he made way for Tomasso Martinelli late in the match.

Neither side was able to score again in normal time, taking the match to a shootout. Altay Bayindir made the crucial save from Fiorentina’s fifth penalty, allowing Kobbie Mainoo to step up and convert the winner.
Pre match atmosphere
The atmosphere in M16 was lively long before kick-off, with plenty for both sets of supporters to enjoy. United’s four summer signings, Matheus Cunha, Diego Leon, Bryan Mbeumo and the newly announced Benjamin Sesko, confirmed only two hours before the match, were introduced on the pitch.
There was also a warm moment for David de Gea, who returned to Old Trafford to receive a commemorative award from Bruno Fernandes before the action began.
Which players stood out for United
Leny Yoro
Maintained his growing reputation as an attacking threat while remaining assured at the back. One supporter blog described him as “a generational centre-back in the making”.
Mason Mount
He did not register a goal or assist, but his relentless pressing from the forward role was key in forcing Fiorentina onto the back foot after United’s early setback.
Kobbie Mainoo
Made a composed impact from the bench, capped by a surging late run that showcased his poise and drive. Kept his nerve to convert the decisive penalty.
