A scrappy first half offered little in the way of chances, but the game opened up after the interval.

Kane Drummond squandered a clear opportunity moments into the second half, glancing a close-range header onto the crossbar. Joe Quigley also went close twice, first dragging a shot wide from 18 yards and later directing a header straight at Glenn Morris after Will Sutton’s cross.

Josh Hawkes blazed over from a promising position as Oldham pressed, but their failure to make possession count was punished. In the 74th minute, substitute Sam Vokes rose above a crowded box to nod in Max Clark’s corner at the back post.

Oldham continued to push, with Morris saving from Tom Conlon’s free-kick before Oli Hutton hit the side-netting and Quigley was again denied. Their late rally came to nothing as Gillingham held firm to claim the points.

Oldham fan reaction

After the match, we managed to gather the thoughts of several Oldham fans. The general consensus was a slight concern over the club’s early-season form.

European Super Football and GM Super News contributor Alex W said: “Scoring was a big problem last year until the play-off run, but I trust the management to fix it. The defending is certainly good enough, barring injuries.”

Hannah Jones added: “Let's be honest, we only came up by virtue of that purple patch of form in the play-offs. For much of last season the performances were decidedly underwhelming. It will take time to settle at the higher level, but I have faith in the manager.”

Dan Hague was slightly more positive: “We had enough chances to have won the game, but once again we flopped in front of goal. Fair play to Gillingham, who took their chance and claimed all three points.”
