An encouraging transfer window for Manchester United?
Liam C believes it was an encouraging transfer window for Manchester United...
It's now up to the players and manager to deliver.
The summer transfer window looked a daunting prospect for Manchester United fans, with no European football and Ruben Amorim badly in need of support.
Ineos responded with a surprise, addressing the team’s most glaring weakness from last season. After United managed only 44 league goals, Amorim brought in Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo and Benjamin Sesko.
In Cunha and Mbeumo, United turned to proven Premier League performers with a record of scoring goals, a refreshing change of direction that had been ignored for too long. Both have made promising starts. Sesko, by contrast, represents a longer-term investment, but the fact he was also courted by Arsenal and Newcastle suggests his pedigree.
The biggest problem at the start of the campaign has been in goal, where Andre Onana and Altay Bayindir have looked short of the required level. United acted on deadline day, signing Senne Lammens from Royal Antwerp for £18m, taking their summer outlay to £215m.
In effect, United have replaced Antony, Garnacho and Hojlund within a single window, and deserve credit for moving so decisively. What they could not do, with time and funds running out, was secure the athletic midfielder Amorim craves. That remains a concern and may have been different had the club enjoyed Champions League income. Carlos Baleba was a late target and is expected to re-emerge as a priority next summer.
Even so, United’s recruitment has been encouraging. They also showed signs of improvement in raising funds, with sales, loan fees and sell-on clauses generating a potential £160m. The departures of Garnacho, Antony, Hojlund, Rashford and Sancho marked a significant reshaping of the forward line.
The next step is to ensure that encouragement off the pitch translates into progress on it.
