Marc Skinner’s side were in front inside four minutes when Hinata Miyazawa struck a fierce effort from the edge of the box after meeting Jess Park’s cross, leaving WSL debutant Rafaela Borggrafe with no chance in the Liverpool goal.
On the stroke of half-time, Ella Toone doubled the advantage with a composed finish after Elisabeth Terland unselfishly rolled the ball into her path, moments after Phallon Tullis-Joyce had been called into action to deny Ceri Holland at the other end.
Closer analysis of what happened
Manchester United controlled the opening period, enjoying 68.3% possession and registering 10 attempts on goal.
Liverpool had opportunities to find a way back after the break, with Cornelia Kapocs dragging wide when clean through and Mia Enderby denied from close range by Phallon Tullis-Joyce.
The hosts improved as the contest wore on but struggled to make any real impression on a United side they had beaten in three of their previous four league encounters.
