Lancashire cricket legend Jimmy Anderson receives knighthood

James Anderson, England’s record-breaking Test wicket taker, has been awarded a knighthood.

The 43-year-old seamer, who claimed 704 wickets in 188 Tests during a 22-year international career, was honoured by the Princess Royal at Windsor Castle.
His knighthood was included in former prime minister Rishi Sunak’s resignation honours list in April, recognising his outstanding contribution to cricket.
Only Sri Lanka’s Muttiah Muralitharan and Australia’s Shane Warne have taken more Test wickets in the history of the game.
Anderson ended his England career in July 2024 but continues to play for Lancashire, the club he grew up supporting.
He is expected to carry on playing for Lancashire next season, something that would see him playing beyond his 44th birthday. This story from SuperNewsAffiliate explored Anderson extending his career and what it might mean for Lancashire next season.

Scottie Taylor said: “The word legend is used too freely, but there is little doubt that Sir Jimmy earns the accolade. It has been a privilege to follow his career.”
Alexia also praised Sir Jimmy: “I suppose we need to change the chant to Sir Jimmy Jimmy, Jimmy Jimmy Jimmy Jimmy Anderson. Well deserved, and it could be a long time before anyone reaches 700 Test wickets again.”
Tony added: “I am not usually in favour of handing out knighthoods to every successful sportsperson. But Jimmy achieved legendary success over an extraordinarily long period while remaining thoroughly professional on and off the field. That is rare.”
William, who has attended Lancashire and England matches for more than 35 years, said: “A world-class bowler, a lesson for everyone in fitness and longevity, and an example of improving your craft over time.”
