Ruben Amorim’s side appeared to be in total control after an hour. Matheus Cunha ended a 16-game wait for his first goal for the club with a composed finish, Casemiro’s deflected strike doubled the lead and Mbeumo added a neat third to underline United’s authority.

That calm disappeared in the closing stages. Danny Welbeck curled in a superb free-kick against his former club with 16 minutes left. Then, two minutes into the seven added, Charalampos Kostoulas glanced in a near-post header to spark real concern among the home side.

United needed Mbeumo again to settle frayed nerves, the forward drilling home his second from close range to ensure Amorim could celebrate another valuable win.

It is a notable shift from three weeks ago, when many felt defeat to Sunderland could have placed the head coach in serious danger. Now there is a growing sense of confidence around his team, who created enough chances to have made the closing moments far more comfortable.

Cunha’s opener was a moment of real quality. Casemiro nudged a short pass into his path on the edge of the area and the Brazilian guided the ball precisely inside the far post. Casemiro then enjoyed a huge stroke of fortune as his wayward effort hit Yasin Ayari on the back and wrong-footed Bart Verbruggen.

The Brighton goalkeeper denied Benjamin Sesko and Bruno Fernandes, making his 300th United appearance, but Mbeumo continued his sharp form with a confident strike for his third goal of the season.

Brighton’s bench were furious that Patrick Dorgu received only a yellow card for a foul on Yankuba Minteh in the build-up to Welbeck’s free-kick. The video assistant referee agreed with the on-field call and the match swung briefly in their favour regardless.

United, though, found a response once more. The points remain theirs and the momentum is beginning to do the same.
