Turning point for Manchester United?

Is that the sound of turning tides?

It is easy to think so after Manchester United secured a victory at Anfield for the first time since 2016.

Manchester United fan Liam C discusses United’s win at Anfield and what it might mean for the rest of the season.

A first Premier League away win since March. Back-to-back league victories not seen since before Ruben Amorim took charge. The idea of a shift in fortunes is certainly worth considering this week.

United were fortunate at Anfield, as any team must be to win on the red side of Stanley Park. Yet the Red Devils also showed attacking verve absent last season, alongside a defensive solidity that has been equally rare.

For a second successive win, Amorim demonstrated his ability to adjust tactics to unsettle the opposition. Benjamin Sesko’s absence in a game where United were likely to play long balls was unexpected. Many had prepared themselves for another frustrating Sunday on Merseyside.

It proved a clever strategy. By leaving Sesko out, Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate were left to claim Senne Lammens’ long kicks, allowing the energetic Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo, Amad Diallo and Bruno Fernandes to sweep up second balls.

The plan produced a second-minute opener and left Arne Slot on the back foot, moments after he had complained about Sesko not starting, as though that one selection defined his team’s preparation for the week.

This is an encouraging sign for Amorim. The coach who impressed across Europe with Sporting has now orchestrated the kind of performance many hoped to see immediately upon his arrival.

Yet it is important to stress the word possibility. United face Brighton at Old Trafford on Saturday, a fixture they have lost in each of the past three seasons.

That match may prove the true measure of whether this is indeed a turning tide, or simply familiar waves breaking over an old sea of disappointment.
