The home side had the first opportunity when Joe Quigley dragged a shot wide from the edge of the box, while at the other end, Sam Dalby was close to converting a cross-shot from Sean Hogan after Oldham failed to clear a corner.

Hogan also went close with a header soon after, before Wanderers were awarded a penalty when Reagan Ogle lost possession to Osei-Tutu and tripped the winger as he tried to recover. Aaron Morley failed to make it count, sending his spot-kick wide.

Bolton eventually found the breakthrough on the stroke of half-time as Osei-Tutu skipped past two defenders and squeezed his shot past Tom Donaghy, who got a touch but couldn’t keep it out. Josh Hawkes had a volley blocked in stoppage time as Oldham sought a response.

The visitors doubled their lead soon after the restart when John McAtee finished neatly from the edge of the area. Dalby was then denied by a brave block from Jake Leake, before Donaghy produced a string of saves to keep out efforts from Forss and Osei-Tutu.

Oldham briefly threatened when Quigley headed wide from a Jordan Woods free-kick, while Kian Harratt struck the post moments later. But Bolton soon extended their lead as Forss cut inside and bent a fine strike into the top corner for 3–0, before adding a second two minutes later with the help of a deflection.

The hosts pulled one back through Drummond, who finished smartly after Mike Fondop’s header caused chaos in the box, but Wanderers quickly restored control. Ritchie turned in Bolton’s fifth after another flowing move, and Dalby added a sixth from close range after Donaghy’s save fell kindly for him.

There was some late consolation for Oldham when Morris powered home in the closing stages, but it did little to alter the outcome of a one-sided contest.
