Stockport's current situation
Dave Challinor’s side will be aiming to respond after a heavy 3-0 defeat at home to Luton Town in their previous league outing, a match in which they were punished for a series of missed opportunities by a far more clinical visiting side.
Results elsewhere offered an unexpected reprieve, with Stevenage, Bradford City and Cardiff City all losing to ensure County remained at the summit. Lincoln City, the only team in the top six to feature over the international break, drew level on points after a 2-1 victory against Doncaster Rovers. The two clubs are also tied on goal difference, with County ahead only by virtue of having scored more goals.
With no other fixtures in the division until the weekend, the televised trip to Peterborough presents an opportunity to strengthen their position. They face a side whose league standing belies their recent form, making the task a potentially testing one.
A closer look at the opposition
A troubled start to the campaign for the Posh saw them once again part company with club legend Darren Ferguson, with his side rooted to the bottom of the division.
Former Swansea City and Notts County boss Luke Williams has come in and made an instant impact, winning his first three games across three different competitions. A 5-0 victory against play-off chasing AFC Wimbledon in their last league outing saw them climb off the bottom and to within four points of safety.
Key stats and things to think about
This will be the 64th competitive meeting between the two clubs, whose history dates back to September 1960. County have recorded 19 victories in that time, while Peterborough have claimed 26.
The last occasion on which County suffered consecutive league defeats came in February 2024, when they were beaten by Crewe Alexandra and Tranmere Rovers in League Two.
The Hatters currently hold the strongest away record in League One, having collected 14 points from their seven matches on the road this season.
