On a night when a sizeable section of the home support stayed outside for the opening 15 minutes in protest at the club’s Chinese ownership, Wolves finally ended a 540-minute wait for a league goal as Jean-Ricner Bellegarde steered the ball into the corner after David Moller Wolfe’s mis-hit effort broke kindly for him.

It punished United for a string of missed opportunities, coming either side of a chaotic moment from Bruno Fernandes after Andre dwelt on the ball for too long and surrendered possession deep in his own half.

But Luke Shaw’s firm challenge on Bellegarde early in the second period sparked a counter-attack that ended with Diogo Dalot sliding a pass across goal for Bryan Mbeumo to apply a simple finish.

When Mason Mount took Fernandes’ chipped pass on his chest and struck in United’s third, it marked the first time since March that they had held a two-goal lead away from home in the league.

Fernandes added a fourth from the spot eight minutes from time after a VAR check for handball against Yerson Mosquera, sealing United’s most convincing victory of the campaign.

More of the best fans comments

Ryan: I felt Casemiro was the standout performer. He kept things compact in midfield and disrupted a number of dangerous breaks. Mbeumo surrendered possession too often and it was worrying to see him turn away in the build-up to Mount's goal, looking strangely disengaged. Heaven offered a steady display, though the overall play lacked the fluency expected.

Olivia T: A good win, but there is plenty to work on. It is also worth noting that Luke Shaw looks a far better player under Amorim than he ever did under Ten Hag and he delivered another assured performance.
