The Denmark Under-21 international made eight senior appearances under Ruben Amorim last season but has yet to feature in a first-team squad during the current campaign.

Those around the club do not view that as a backward step. Instead, it is seen as a natural phase in Obi’s development, particularly given that his physical stature has previously given him a clear edge at youth level.

Obi was on the scoresheet in United’s impressive 3-1 Premier League Under-18 win away at Manchester City on Saturday, though his broader contribution stood out just as much. His willingness to track back and engage defensively was noted by coaches.

There is also a sense that perspective is needed. Given his exposure to senior football last season, it is easy to forget quite how young Obi remains.

The forward is expected to retain his place for Wednesday’s FA Youth Cup last-16 tie at Oxford. Midfielder Jim Thwaites could also come into contention after returning from injury, having made two substitute appearances since his comeback.

A closer look at his United career so far

A move to United from Arsenal was concluded at the end of September 2024. On his first start for any United side, he scored a hat-trick in a 6–0 Under-18s win over Nottingham Forest.

He was named in a senior squad for the first time on 16 February 2025, making his senior debut as a 90th minute substitute for Casemiro in a 1–0 league defeat at Tottenham Hotspur.

The youngster then scored two goals in a post season friendly that came shortly after United's poor end to the 2024/2025 season.
