Posh, who sacked Luke Williams and appointed interim boss Ryan Harley after last Saturday's 2-0 defeat by Doncaster, created the first opening in the eighth minute when Harry Ashfield sent a tame effort straight at Stockport goalkeeper Luca Ashby-Hammond.

Peterborough goalkeeper Alex Bass then produced a smart diving save to deny Wootton from close range, before Harry Wood's powerful effort was deflected wide as Stockport pushed for an opener midway through the first half.

A lightning-fast Peterborough counter-attack saw Boluwatife Shofowoke race on to an incisive pass from Harry Leonard and force a low save from Ashby-Hammond as the visitors finished the half on the front foot.

Stockport took the lead six minutes after the restart when Ben Woods' attempted clearance ricocheted off Jack Diamond and fell to Wootton, who fired home his sixth goal of the season.

Shofowoke curled an effort towards Ashby-Hammond before a well-worked short corner gave Ethan Williams space to whip a teasing cross across goal as Peterborough continued to pose a threat.

However, the Hatters held firm against late Posh pressure to climb to third in League One with the victory.
