Manchester City deny wrongdoing, but being found guilty of the most serious charges could leave them facing a points deduction severe enough to trigger relegation, plus substantial fines or even expulsion from the Premier League.

An appeal process could mean the uncertainty surrounding the case continues to cast a shadow over the top flight. A sanctions hearing could still be months away and, once the panel has ruled, the outcome may not be published until City's appeal has been completed, a process that could itself take considerable time.

It is understood that most City players do not have relegation release clauses in their contracts should the club lose their Premier League status as a result of any sanctions.
