Carrick dropped Fernandes to the bench for Sunday's 3-0 home defeat by Bournemouth after the Portuguese midfielder questioned the tactics employed in a 4-1 Champions League loss to Como.
The defeat by Bournemouth left Carrick's future hanging by a thread, but the 45-year-old will remain in charge for Saturday's trip to Chelsea.
It remains unclear whether Fernandes will return to the starting line-up, but the pair held clear-the-air talks at United's Carrington training ground on Tuesday in an attempt to move forward.
Carrick insists there is "no decision to be made" over Fernandes's captaincy.
The United boss also 'doesn't need assurances' over future
United head to Chelsea having gone eight games without a win, their worst run of results since the 2015-16 season.
The club have not endured a sequence of nine matches without a victory since the 1988-89 campaign.
Almost 40 hours passed between Sunday's defeat by Bournemouth and the club providing clarification on Carrick's future, with the Englishman given an opportunity to turn things around at Old Trafford.

Discussions involving the Glazer family, minority owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe, chief executive Omar Berrada and director of football Jason Wilcox took place before Carrick's immediate future was confirmed.
Carrick is expected to remain in charge for next Tuesday's Champions League fixture against Roma and the Premier League meeting with Aston Villa at Old Trafford on 8 November, after which the season's next international break begins.
However, Carrick says he does not need assurances about his position.
