There have been calls for Manchester City to be stripped of their trophies and relegated after they were found guilty of multiple Premier League financial rule breaches.

The 45-year-old was on the pitch at Sunderland when he learned that City had won their first Premier League title in 2012, thanks to Sergio Aguero's famous injury-time winner.

Carrick was still part of Jose Mourinho's squad when United finished runners-up to Pep Guardiola's City in 2018, and was also a member of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's coaching staff when it happened again in 2020-21.

However, Carrick says receiving a winners' medal years after the event would not make up for missing out on the title at the time.

Ticker banner to return to Old Trafford

Manchester United's famous ticker banner will return to the Stretford End at Old Trafford on Saturday, displaying 50 to mark the number of years since Manchester City last won a trophy.

The ticker was first unveiled in 2000, when it marked 24 years since City's previous piece of silverware, the 1976 League Cup. The number increased by one each year until 2011, when City ended their trophy drought by beating Stoke City in the FA Cup final.

The Red Army (TRA) supporters' group has produced its own version in response to City being found guilty of multiple Premier League financial rule breaches. Although City are appealing against the decision, TRA believes their neighbours' success under the ownership of Sheikh Mansour should be removed from the record books.

Saturday's banner will show the number ticking over from 50 to 51, with the 2026-27 season already under way.
