More uncertainty for Salford Red Devils

The case was first delayed in June after the club said it was confident of securing a bridging loan to settle a tax bill owed to HMRC.

It has been a turbulent year for Salford on and off the pitch. A wave of player departures, delays to wage payments and a string of heavy defeats in 2025 have left them anchored to the foot of the Super League table.

Salford’s current plight is a stark contrast to their impressive 2024 season, when Paul Rowley guided them to fourth place and a play-off berth.

Financial difficulties over the winter forced the club to request an advance on their 2025 distribution payments, while a consortium headed by the Swiss businessman Dario Berta completed a takeover on the eve of the new campaign.

Since then the situation has deteriorated. Chief executive Chris Irwin resigned less than three months into his tenure and in May, Salford City Council withdrew from talks over the club’s attempt to purchase the Salford Community Stadium.

The Rugby Football League’s sustainability cap has further hindered them, restricting team selection and leaving the Red Devils reliant on youthful line-ups. That policy contributed to their record 82-0 defeat at the hands of St Helens at the start of the season.

Further protests planned

A statement from The 1873, a Salford Red Devils fan group, reads: " Following this morning’s court hearing, we can confirm that a further 56 day adjournment has been granted.

"At the hearing, legal representatives on behalf of Salford City Reds 2013 Limited presented a document dated 2nd September 2025 which inferred that the final funding documents for a £5 million bridging loan are in the process of being drafted, with a facility expected to be in place to draw down from these funds within the next 10 days.

"However, it was made clear that HMRC have not received any funds from the club in respect of its outstanding debt since the previous hearing. In that time, further liabilities have accrued. In addition, a supporting creditor was present in court, confirming they are owed £214,000.

"The next hearing is scheduled for 29th October 2025. We must highlight that beyond the barrister, no representatives from the club were present in court. This absence was damning and only further reflects the contempt and disregard being shown for the position the club has found itself in, directly due to the actions of certain individuals."

"The club’s official statement described today’s outcome as “a positive outcome” and “a vital step forward,” claiming it reflects “the resilience of the club and ongoing efforts.” We utterly reject this narrative. The owners remain tone deaf, delusional, and completely detached from the sentiment of supporters. There is no resilience here, and no positivity, only continued uncertainty and worsening damage caused solely by those still in charge who are single handedly responsible for this mess.

"We also note their statement thanking supporters for “continued support and backing.” Let us be clear, this support is for the players and staff only. It is not, under any circumstances, extended to those culpable for the financial collapse of the club.

"Our protest continues this Thursday. We strongly encourage all supporters to attend the march and have their voices heard. Together, we must show that we will not stop until we understand clearly and transparently that the immediate and long term future of Salford Red Devils is secure."
