A superb first-half hat-trick from Federico Valverde put Real Madrid firmly in command of this last-16 tie.
Valverde ran City ragged with a display of real quality. Pep Guardiola’s side carried a threat in attack but were repeatedly exposed at the back.
Real were without the injured duo Kylian Mbappé and Jude Bellingham, along with long-term absentee Rodrygo, yet still possessed more than enough firepower to exploit City’s defensive fragility.
The 2023 European champions began brightly
They briefly unsettled Real before the contest turned sharply on 20 minutes.
The opening goal was straightforward in its execution. Thibaut Courtois launched a long pass that dropped beyond Nico O'Reilly, allowing Valverde to race through, round Gianluigi Donnarumma and finish from a tight angle.
The Uruguayan doubled Real’s lead seven minutes later, steering a low finish across Donnarumma, before completing his hat-trick in superb fashion.
Meeting a delightful lofted through ball, the Real captain produced a moment of invention, lifting the ball over Marc Guéhi in a crowded space before beating Donnarumma on the volley.
City looked set to fall further behind on the hour when Real were awarded a penalty after Donnarumma brought down Vinícius Júnior.
Valverde stepped up himself but was far too casual with the attempt. Donnarumma guessed correctly, diving low to his left to push the spot-kick away.
City thought they had a route back into the tie when O’Reilly seized on a loose ball after Thiago was dispossessed in the area, but Courtois reacted sharply, sticking out a leg to keep the effort out.
