Manchester United have admitted they underestimated the number of fans sharing account details before launching an investigation into ticket touting, acknowledging that the process has caused “distress” for some supporters.

United began the investigation last month after identifying several accounts whose activity they said warranted further scrutiny.

In one case, the club said 1,088 accounts had been accessed from a single device. The editor of Man United fans blog ‘The View from K Stand’ questions the validity of this accusation. In a passionate blog on their website, some United fans spoke about their despair of what the club was doing to loyal fans.

However, it soon became apparent that several genuine supporters feared their season tickets could be confiscated without understanding why.

What was the response from the club?

United defended their actions privately but, following a fans’ forum on 30 July where concerns were raised, have now acknowledged that mistakes were made in the way the investigation was conducted.

The club said a “satisfactory explanation” had been provided in a “substantial number of cases” and restrictions had been removed from those accounts.
